Trust me, do not farm without commercial refrigeration. Without proper cooling capacity, you will never get ahead on a farm. In order to stream line tasks on the farm, you need to be able to get product off the field fast and into the cold right away. One; this stops degradation of the product. Two; it allows you to market the product longer because you increase the shelf life. Three; It buys you time when you don’t have to worry about product degrading, so you can focus on other tasks, otherwise the clock is ticking the second you pull crops from the ground. Four; It makes it so you can work around the weather and harvest crops when they are ready and perfect, instead of having to wait until Friday to harvest for a Saturday market. The list of reasons goes on, but you get the idea. Get a walk-in cooler! This isn’t something to cut corners on.
For our coolers, we use restaurant style stand-alone coolers that have been modified to replace the original compressor with an AC unit with a Cool-Bot. It’s a cheap and effective way to replace an expensive and energy intensive compressor. We use an LG 8000 BTU A/C unit in combination with a Cool-Bot.
